Food and politics have gone have gone hand and hand since medieval times. The royalty and rich citizens would be eating exotic foods from different countries. For example, well-off French citizens would drink Greek wine and in Greece, the Greeks would be eating Persian peaches and other fruits. People showed power by eating food from a far off land. They relegated local food to peasants. It was a lifestyle for rich families to expand their diets by looking for more exotic foods. It could almost be compared to a "Keeping Up with The Joneses" ideal. If you see your neighbor drinking Greek wine, you may want to outdo them and get the Persian fruits.
Today in modern times, we have a new outlook on food. The growing movement of eating locally is a sharp contrast to that ideal from long ago. An
example would be the White House beer recipe. The current President is not shipping in beer from other countries to find the “finest ale,” but rather in an
effort with the White House, crafting their own. It is amazing to think that what Americans call “The First Family” is partaking in making their own local
varieties of a beverage, especially when you look at how this would have been viewed in the past. In the past, the White House would be viewed as low members of society within the United States. They are making their own beer instead of importing a beer that shows their power of trade.
Everything goes to show that times change. It makes you wonder what impact food will have 100 years from now. Will we go back to exotic foods
showing signs of power? Will we continue down the path of local food being treasured? While we can’t be sure, it is amazing to think that in a relatively short amount of time, our views upon food have changed so much.
