Sunrise Cafe
Sunrise Cafe is a small restaurant in Yellow Springs. In the sea of charming restaurants Sunrise Cafe is almost lost, but makes itself known with the daily specials chalkboard out front which entails several fresh seasonal dishes that are enticing and almost exotic. Upon walking in you are greeted by a charming shelf full of diverse teacups covered by a window of glass.
While waiting to sit the restaurant seems bright because of the sunlight pouring in, but when you are taken to be seated and finally get past the shelf of teacups you are seemingly thrown into a dark place that feels alien to your arrival. There's a mass of people sitting and chatting in the tight confines of the cafe and the Chef's area is completely visible to the front guest area.
When you sit down you can see dim lights covered by old cans of olive oil which only compliments the claustrophobic atmosphere. On the walls you see photos and paintings with price tags all made by local artists. It isn't hard to conclude that the walls are always changing and it only adds to the charm.
When it came time to order, a glass of organic orange juice and the chocolate bread french toast was my ticket. Everything is made from scratch upon ordering at Sunrise and the extra wait is worth it simply to drench yourself in the atmosphere. When the food arrived it was another reason that made the wait worth it. The orange juice truly was a freshly squeezed orange. It also had all of the pith and made it truly feel organic and fresh. The chocolate bread french toast was a freshly made bread with chocolate chips and dipped in eggs before being fried. The french toast was true indulgence. Bordering on too rich, the french toast truly gives you an actual meal and dessert in one package. It is also served with maple syrup and melted butter both of which I added liberally and to my enjoyment. In truth, I enjoyed the extra indulgence and flirting with that line of too rich.
Overall, the Sunrise Cafe stands out from other restaurants, but is in a location that is filled with stand outs. It may be it's only downfall, but it capitalizes with it's atmosphere and menu and has earned a respectable 8/10.
