Being a picky eater
I've been a picky eater since I was small. I also have a fairly weak stomach, which has definitely played a huge role in my diet. Despite that, I have always been very stubborn about what I eat, but as I've grown older and learned to cook for myself, I've gained an increased interest in food. With this new interest in food, I believe it's now time to branch out and try to break being a "picky eater." Up until recently, food has just been something to give me nourishment. I've almost taken it for granted. Food is now something different. It's a gateway to a new experience. While I will now try new things, I am still looking out for my own health, and that means my weak stomach. Hopefully some of the new things I try won't end up being a "bad" next day for me. With that in mind, I am looking forward to possibly going "Bourdain" and trying some foreign delicacies that clash with the typical American food.
If there is one food that I am keen for, it's the classic pepperoni pizza. Pizza in general is a food that is versatile. There are a variety of ways to prepare and bake pizza. It's truly an art. I've tried my own hand in cooking pizza and while I've improved greatly, it's something I've yet to perfect. There are so many details in each step of the process that you can change something as small as the surface you bake the pizza on, and get a different texture and taste. Another example, if I hand stretch the dough then I will get a light, soft crust, whereas if I use a rolling pin I will get a thin, dense, and crispy crust. If you add eggs, which is optional, you will get a more brown and light crust. With simple things like that in mind, I've tried to get it right, but I'm still a long way off.
Through the duration of this experiment of trying new foods, I don't want to break away from what I already love and I plan to have a good balance between new and familiar. Hopefully the experience will broaden my horizons and I will find more food that I enjoy rather than food I dislike.
So, what is my overall goal? To experiment and keep consistency. I don't want to lose "old friends," but I'd like to make some new ones as well. With the direction I plan on taking, this should be something fun and different, to take me out of my own comfort zone. It will also be a tool to help me learn new things about culture, politics, and even about myself. I look forward to it.
